How to determine if a cold gel ice pack is still usable

To determine if a cold gel ice pack is still functional, mainly look at three aspects: appearance, gel state, and sealing. These can be easily identified at a glance:
1. Check if the bag is damaged (this is the most crucial point)
- If there are cracks, holes, glue leakage or water seepage → Directly scrap it
- The bag is obviously aged, hard and brittle, and breaks easily when bent → No longer usable
- The sealing part has glue leakage or bulging → Likely to leak liquid, not recommended to continue using
2. Feel the state of the gel inside
- Normal: After freezing, it still retains some elasticity and can be slightly bent. After thawing, it flows smoothly.
- Abnormal: The gel completely solidifies and hardens like a stone, no longer flows, and separates to release water → Failure. The cold compress effect is poor and it is prone to frostbite.
3. Smell the odor and observe the color
- Presence of pungent odor or musty smell
- Gel changes color, turns yellow, turns black, develops mold spots
→ All of these indicate spoilage. Discard immediately.
4. Simple trial and judgment
After freezing, apply it to the wrapped area:
- If it remains consistently cold and the temperature is uniform → Normal
- If there is a particularly cold area or if the temperature is inconsistent and fluctuates greatly → The gel has failed and it is not recommended to use

Quick summary
As long as the following conditions are met: no leakage, no cracking, the gel does not clump or deteriorate, and there is no odor, it can be reused;
On the contrary, if any of these issues occur, for safety and effectiveness, it is recommended to replace it with a new one directly.
