Ice packs and dry ice are two common cooling materials, but they differ significantly in their technical principles, application scenarios, safety, and cost.

 

Technical Principles and Composition: Ice packs are typically made of superabsorbent polymers such as sodium polyacrylate or superabsorbent polymers, filled with a non-toxic and harmless absorbent gel. They expand upon absorbing moisture to form ice crystals and need to be pre-frozen to below 0°C before use. Dry ice, on the other hand, is solid carbon dioxide (CO₂), which has a temperature of -78.5°C at normal pressure. It is formed by compressing carbon dioxide gas and then cooling it to solidify. During sublimation, it directly changes from a solid to a gaseous state without going through a liquid stage.

 

Cooling Effect and Duration: Dry ice has a much stronger cooling capacity than ice packs. Its sublimation heat absorption efficiency is high; 1 kg of dry ice can release approximately 137 kcal of heat, rapidly lowering the ambient temperature to below -70°C, making it suitable for ultra-low temperature applications. However, dry ice sublimates relatively quickly, losing about 3-5% of its weight per hour at room temperature (25°C), and its shelf life is typically no more than 24 hours. Ice packs typically maintain a cooling temperature of 0-4℃, using phase change to absorb heat and maintain low temperatures. One kilogram of ice pack provides approximately 80 kilocalories of heat, with a continuous cooling time of 24-48 hours, making it suitable for medium to low temperature applications.

 

Application Scenarios Differences: Due to its ultra-low temperature properties, dry ice is primarily used for biological sample transportation (such as vaccines and cells), industrial equipment cooling, freezing of special foods (such as ice cream cakes), and stage smoke effects. However, the use of dry ice requires strict adherence to safety regulations, as the carbon dioxide gas produced during sublimation may pose a suffocation risk, and direct skin contact can cause frostbite. Ice packs are more suitable for everyday cold chain logistics (such as fresh food and pharmaceuticals), cold compresses for sports injuries, beauty care, and home refrigeration. They are highly safe, reusable, and easy to use, making them suitable for non-professional users.

 

Cost and Transportation Requirements: Dry ice is relatively expensive, currently priced at 5-15 yuan/kg. Transportation must comply with hazardous materials management regulations (such as using dedicated insulated boxes and labeling with "dry ice"), and the quantity transported at one time is usually no more than 5 kg. Ice packs have low costs, with standard models costing approximately 0.5-2 yuan each, and high-end reusable models costing approximately 5-10 yuan each. Transportation requires no special requirements and can be handled through regular logistics.

 

Industry Standards and Compliance: Dry ice production must comply with the "Regulations on the Safety Management of Hazardous Chemicals," and storage temperatures must be below -80℃, with ventilation equipment required. Ice pack production must comply with food contact material standards (such as GB 4806.7-2016), and some medical ice packs also require medical device registration certification.
