The Quality Of Diving Materials

The quality of diving materials (Neoprene/SBR/CR) mainly depends on five aspects: material formula, foaming process, adhesion strength, physical properties, and environmental protection level. Inferior materials tend to be hard, prone to cracking, prone to shedding fabric, have an unpleasant smell, and are not durable.

I. Materials and Formula (Determining the Basic Quality)
- CR (Chloroprene Rubber): The top choice, with excellent elasticity, resistance to seawater, aging resistance, and strong insulation; used in diving suits and high-end protective gear.
- SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber): Mid-to-low-end mainstream, low price, soft feel; less elastic/durable than CR; used for cup covers, computer bags, and ordinary protective gear.
- Composite Material (CR + SBR): Balances performance and cost; commonly found in mid-range products.
- Density: High quality 130–210 kg/m³; too low makes it soft and prone to collapse, too high makes it hard and inflexible.

II. Intuitive Identification (Quick 5-second Judgment)
1. Observe the appearance: The surface is smooth and matte, without reflection, no pinholes, and no bubbles; reflective/ shiny → prone to cracking, poor elasticity.
2. Feel the texture: Soft and moderate, quick rebound, not sticky, not rough; too hard → brittle cracking, too soft → poor support, prone to deformation.
3. Pull elasticity: Horizontal stretching ≥ 260%, quickly rebounds when released, no white marks, no cracks; after stretching, turns white/ cracks → of poor quality.
4. Smell the odor: Slight rubber smell, no pungent odor; pungent/ fishy smell → insufficient vulcanization, excessive harmful substances, prone to aging.
5. Fold marks: No white marks or cracks after repeated bending; white marks are difficult to disappear after folding → poor quality.

III. Key Physical Indicators (Core Performance)
- Thickness tolerance: Commonly 2–5 mm; High-quality: ±0.1 mm, uniform thickness; Poor quality: Uneven thickness, prone to collapse during compression.
- Hardness (Shore C): 30–50° is suitable; Too hard is not flexible, too soft lacks support.
- Permanent compression deformation: ≤10% (ISO 815); Lower value → Does not collapse over time and maintains warmth for a long time.
- Adhesion strength: The fabric and the sponge do not come off when torn apart, and do not delaminate after 500 stretches; Poor quality: Easily loses fabric and develops cracks.
- Color fastness: 4–5 grades, does not fade or change color after washing/friction.
- Water resistance: Closed-cell structure, water absorption rate ≤ 5%; Drops form beads and do not seep through.

IV. Technology and Environmental Protection (Durability + Safety)
- Foaming process: Closed-cell foaming (good for insulation and waterproofing); Open-cell → prone to leakage, poor insulation, and prone to absorbing water and becoming heavier.
- Adhesion process: High-temperature hot pressing + eco-friendly glue; Cold bonding / inferior glue → prone to glue separation, strong odor.
- Environmental certification: Oeko-Tex 100, SGS, REACH; No AZO dyes, no heavy metals, no formaldehyde.

V. Common Grades and Price References
- Top-level (Yamamoto/Limestone CR): Extremely high elasticity, resistant to aging, environmentally friendly; ¥2000+/sqm; High-end diving suits, professional protective gear.
- High-end (Pure CR): Good elasticity, resistant to seawater, durable; ¥800–1500/sqm; Diving suits, surfing suits, high-end protective gear.
- Mid-range (CR + SBR Composite): Balanced performance and price; ¥400–700/sqm; Sports protective gear, outdoor supplies.
- Low-end (Pure SBR): Low price, average elasticity, prone to aging; ¥150–300/sqm; Cup covers, computer bags, disposable items.

VI. Pitfall Summary
- ✅ Choose matte, soft, highly elastic, odorless, closed-cell, and tightly adhering materials.
- ✅ Prefer CR or high CR content composite materials, and make sure to check for environmental certifications.
- ❌ Avoid poor-quality materials that are shiny, hard, prone to cracking, have a pungent smell, have open pores, or are prone to shedding fabric.
